What’s CBD?

The magic. The unknown. Your new future without pain.

The magic. The unknown. Your new future without pain.

CBD is a non-intoxicating compound found in cannabis plants.  Its one of several plant chemicals that are known as “phytocannabinoids”.  Since there are several different types of native cannabis plants and cannabis chemicals, for everyone’s safety it is absolutely imperative to know exactly what kind of cannabis oil you’re taking in.

The dominant phytocannabinoids are THC and CBD.  THC is responsible for the euphoric high that’s associated with potent marijuana strains, while CBD varieties of Hemp are mainly cultivated for their medicinal properties.  And although they are both recognized as therapeutic plant compounds (with anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects), they work much differently in the body and mind.

Cannabinoids, like THC and CBD, bind to receptors that are found throughout the body’s nervous and immune systems.  This wasn’t exactly clear until scientists recently discovered the body’s Endocannabinoid System – endogenous chemicals and receptors made in the body that are also activated by plant cannabinoids.

Different cannabinoids bind to different receptors. Their strength and ability to bind and modulate receptors are ranked by their “affinity”.  So while THC has shown a high affinity for the psycho-active CB1 receptors in the brain, CBD has shown no affinity for the CB1 receptor sights in the brain. Thus, the wondrous cannabinoid CBD is not capable of getting you “high”.

Hemp vs. Marijuana

Chemical Makeup

Hemp and Marijuana are both ancient plant species from the same genus, known as Cannabis.  Cannabis Hemp has historically been cultivated for its robust and high-yielding fibers, oils, seeds, and cellulose-rich stalks (making it a raw renewable resource for the production of paper). While Marijuana is typically grown for its high-THC producing female flowers, Hemp flowers, seeds, and extracts are free of THC and instead are abundant in CBD.

Legality

The laws and regulations for hemp and marijuana are very different. On one hand, marijuana is only legal in specific states that allow it, and is currently illegal according to the federal government. On the other hand, hemp and hemp derived products were made legal for cultivation and distribution by the federal government in the 2014 Farm Bill passed by the United States Congress.

How does CBD work?

All people and animals have an endocannabinoid system. The Human Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is a network of receptors spread throughout our entire body that control some of our most vital life functions, including our immune system, memory, appetite, sleep pattern, mood and pain sensation. CBD, a cannabinoid, accesses this system in your body.

Endocannabinoid system controls:

  • Hypothalamus
  • Thymus
  • Pituitary Gland
  • Pancreas
  • Pineal Gland
  • Adrenal Glands
  • Parathyroid Glands
  • Kidneys
  • Thyroid Gland
  • Ovaries

CBD is for everyone.

The Brightfield Group and HelloMD ran a survey last year to figure out what people are using CBD for.

  • 70% Anxiety
  • 31% Nausea
  • 62% Sleep Problems
  • 31% Arthritis
  • 54% Inflammation And Joint Pain
  • 17% Sciatica
  • 49% Depression
  • 15% PTSD
  • 38% Muscle Tension Or Strain
  • 11% Fibromyalgia
  • 36% Migraines Or Tension Headaches
  • 8% Neuropathy
  • 35% Severe Or Chronic Pain
